Midvale City 2025
Mayoral and City Council Elections

Denece Mikolash

Incumbent for City Council
District 5

Denece Mikolash

Here are the questions that Living In Midvale asked the candidate. As soon as the candidate answers the questions, we'll post those too.

Denece,

Public Safety:

  • How can “community outreach” be improved to help with community building with the residents of Midvale?
  • What has been a big “crime” issue on Main Street that makes you feel that revitalizing it will “help crime go down”?
  • You said that “police can’t and shouldn’t have to do everything”, what do you think that the police should do and what they shouldn’t do?
  • What “programs” did you have in mind to “educate the community” and to “help crime areas feel safer”?

Police:

  • With the “US vs THEM” mentality, how can we stop that and build trust between the Midvale residents and the police?
  • What has happened that you feel that Midvale needs a “citizens oversight board for accountability” with the police department? How do you anticipate that the “citizens oversight board” will function?

Homelessness:

  • When people ask why Midvale get “stuck” with the homeless shelter and population, the normal response from Midvale is that “everyone” is having to do it and we have to do what the county and state tell us to, but you said that “many cities pay to not have a homeless shelter”, so what’s really happening there and what can Midvale City and the residents do to improve the situation?

Growth:

  • What “plan” does Midvale have regarding handling the growth and transportation?

Money:

  • Thank you for prioritizing "transparency in the budget”, what kinds of festivals and other events can Midvale do to “increase tax revenue”?

Property Tax:

  • What kind of businesses do you think we need to bring to Midvale to generate “more sales tax” revenue?
  • What ways can we “attract more people to shop and dine in Midvale”?

Housing Affordability:

  • What “assistance programs” do we need to bring to Midvale?
  • You would like to see a “variety of housing options”, what does that “variety” look like to you and what’s a happy medium on houses vs condos vs townhouses vs apartments and high density housing?
  • How can Midvale help get residents “from renting to home ownership”?

ICE:

  • ICE has been a hot topic and according to what we’ve found, ICE hasn’t been a big issue in Midvale, how can we make “everyone feel safe here”, “regardless of status”?

Events and Activities:

  • Even though we’re not a “big” city, what is it that you’re “proud of” that we’re doing?
  • What is it about Main Street that you’re “proud of”?
  • Can you give us more details about the “quarterly arts activities” that you’ve asked the brewing company to do?
  • One of the common issues with activities is getting volunteers to help, how can we work on improving the community support desire to volunteer and help with our activities?

City Outreach:

  • How can we “do better to inform residents” of what’s going on in Midvale?

Favorite Part of Midvale:

  • What is it about Main Street, the trails and parks that makes them some of your favorite parts of Midvale?
  • What other things do you enjoy about Midvale?

Other:

  • If you don’t get re-elected as City Council, what will you do to help make Midvale a better place?
  • Is there anything else you would like the residents of Midvale to know about you or your plans if you do get re-elected to City Council?
