Midvale City 2025
Mayoral and City Council Elections

David Fair

Running for Mayor

David Fair

Here are the questions that Living In Midvale asked the candidate. As soon as the candidate answers the questions, we'll post those too.

David,

Public Safety:

  • Since the UPD is already a large portion of Midvale’s budget, how do you propose to increase the police force?
  • You said that we need to find a better way to enforce the laws in the areas that use the police resources more than they should; how do you propose that UPD does that?
  • A community based approach is what you suggested for helping with the crime in Midvale and supporting a “neighbor watching over neighbor” type system like the Neighborhood Watch; how can we make that happen and what are some examples of what you see that kind of program looking like?

Police:

  • How do you propose that the UPD officers get more involved in the community so that people can get to know them and take the “threateningness” out of the police?

Homelessness:

  • How do you propose that Midvale work on getting funding support from the state to help with the homelessness issues?
  • With the already strained budget of Midvale, how effective do you think cameras in the park will be in dealing with the homelessness issues that the residents are concerned about?

Growth:

  • What does Midvale need to change to promote being more responsible in the growth of the city?
  • With this growth, how can the safety of pedestrian travel be addressed?
  • The city turned down the permit for the proposed high density housing on 7th East, where the old medical building was, when the city says they haven’t been able to refuse permits in the past, why do you think they were able to this time and how can we use that to our advantage to help mitigate the growth our city is seeing?

Money:

  • Maintaining the infrastructure and utilities in Midvale isn’t a cheap thing to do, do you feel that we have the budget to maintain our deteriorating infrastructure and if not, what can we do about that?

Property Tax:

  • When you approached the city 20 years ago and asked them if they wanted to be a residential or commercial city and they told you “commercial”, how did you feel about that and has your feelings on that changed?
  • How do you think we can strike a good balance between residential and commercial in Midvale?
  • What do you feel needs to be “reaccessed” regarding the taxes on rental properties and why?

Housing Affordability:

  • With the housing affordability issue being “bigger than Midvale”, how do you propose that we find a solution to that?
  • You said that we already have “lots” of affordable housing in Midvale, why do you feel that way and why do we not need more of it?
  • How do you propose that we help people find the resources they need for housing?

ICE:

  • Many people have a fear of ICE, even though we haven’t found evidence of a big ICE presence in Midvale; how can we help calm those resident’s fears about ICE?
  • Your opinion on ICE is very different from the others at the Meet the Candidates forum, how do you propose that we support them to help them catch the murders, rapists, drug/human traffickers, etc. they’re looking for and hopefully reduce the fear some residents have of accidentally being caught up in this?

Events and Activities:

  • Do you feel that Midvale has a good chance at getting a Recreation Center on the east side and what do you feel that you can do to help improve our chances of getting it?What can you and those at the city level do to help reduce the east side / west side “disconnect” that Midvale has?
  • What do you think it would take to get a farmers market in Midvale?
  • What can be done to help “build the community”

City Outreach:

  • Putting info in the utility bill and the Midvale Journal are good options for getting the word out about what’s going on in Midvale, any thoughts on other ways to help inform the community?
  • The events in Midvale are great, but they’re not actively talked about, what do you think needs to be done to get people “excited” about them?

Favorite Part of Midvale:

  • What is it about the restaurants in Midvale that make them one of your favorite parts of Midvale?
  • What other things do you enjoy about Midvale?

Other:

  • If you don’t get elected as Mayor, what will you do to help make Midvale a better place?
  • Is there anything else you would like the residents of Midvale to know about you or your plans if you do become Mayor of Midvale?
